Pre-Sea Training

We provided Pre-Sea Training

The South African Fisheries Development Fund partnered with well-established and accredited service providers to empower communities with these training courses.

The Pre-Sea (Safety Familiarisation) training is a mandatory requirement for all sea-going persons. Training comprises basis skills all crew on vessels should be familiarise with when working at sea. The safety familiarisation training is compliant with the Merchant Shipping (Safe Manning, Training and Certification) regulations of 2013 (as amended). Anecdotal research reveals that many crew on some vessels have not been certificated against the mandatory requirement. Moreover, the training is necessary to fast-track new entrants (youth) into the fishing industry. During 2021, the Fisheries Development together with its partners, i.e. Food and Beverages Seta and Sea Harvest Training successfully trained more than 80 Fishers (mostly youth) from the Northern Cape’s fishing villages against the SAMSA accredited Pre Sea (Safety Familiarisation) program. Moreover, to build local capacity a fishing skipper from the Port Nolloth fishing community was appointed as the training facilitator.
